Advocate for Equal Education Opportunities
Make a difference today by standing up for California's most vulnerable students. Our state's funding model currently penalizes those who miss school, leaving them unsupported and their schools under-resourced. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a fairer system where state funds for education are allocated based on enrollment, not daily attendance. This gives every student, regardless of circumstance, the opportunity to thrive.
Many of California’s most vulnerable students are missing school. In the 2021-22 school year, nearly two million students missed at least 18 days of school. Yet, when these students are absent, the state of California does not offer support to the schools charged with getting them to class and helping them learn. Instead, it does the opposite: It withholds money from their education.
This means that the schools that serve the most vulnerable students often wind up with less funding than wealthier schools, hindering educators’ ability to address students' needs and improve academic outcomes.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Join us in advocating for fair funding so that our public schools can support every student they serve.

FAIR FUNDING. SUPPORTED STUDENTS.
A lot of kids are missing a lot of school.
At present, California is one of only six states that funds schools based on the average number of students who attend school each day. With an increase in absences, which is most common among the most vulnerable kids, the schools that serve them often wind up with less funding than their wealthier peers.
That financial penalty prevents those schools from being able to best support getting kids back into class.
That's why we're advocating for California policymakers to fund our schools fairly and provide resources to schools based on the number of students who are enrolled. This way, when a student is absent, the school is better resourced to offer support to that student, instead of being punished for that absence.
Our students deserve fair funding so that our schools can support them in reaching their full potential and our communities can thrive.

California must change the way it funds its public schools to provide resources for the schools that serve the most vulnerable kids.
